Midsomer Murders: Fire Up The Escort

22nd September, 2009

JOHN Nettles appears inspired by the spirit of Gene Hunt in tomorrow night’s new Midsomer Murders film.
Without the aid of Tom Tom, Det Chief Insp Tom Barnaby navigates a speeding rally car en route to solving the latest murder mystery.
But not before ending up flat out after a highly entertaining cycling stunt on his front drive.
Written by Michael Russell, The Glitch will delight fans of Midsomer’s beautiful countryside.
It’s the 70th episode, with the next series – 13 – now in production ahead of John’s last filming day in 2010 after his decision to retire from the role.
His replacement is due to be announced next month.
But, as has been said many times before, John Nettles will be a very hard act to follow.
“Oh yes, what a genius,” exclaims Barnaby after fixing the chain on watching wife Joyce’s (Jane Wymark) bicycle.

“I’ve done a good job on this,” he adds, pedaling towards inevitable disaster.
Just about everyone gets on their bike in this episode.
Including Det Sgt Ben Jones (Jason Hughes) and Det Con Gail Stephens (Kirsty Dillon).
Along with Joyce and Cully (Laura Howard), amid hints of possible forthcoming baby news for the latter.
The guest cast, led by David Haig as Midsomer University science fellow and computer wizard George Jeffers, also bring their cycle helmets.
The title of the episode refers to Kernel Logic, an air traffic control system Jeffers has developed which stands to make millions for a software company.
I have to confess I got a tiny bit lost before the end – but that never spoils my enjoyment of what remains a top class ITV1 drama series.
With Joyce and Cully making the front page of the Causton Advertiser.

Locations I recognised include Hambledon, Bucks and Brightwell Baldwin in Oxfordshire.
If you’re ever near the latter, pop into the local pub here.
Episode four of series 12 also treats us to some glorious off the beaten track cycle ride shots.
Before Barnaby rallies to save the day.
Producer Brian True-May – Mr Midsomer himself – says: “We are delighted to have reached another milestone – our 70th episode.
“We are lucky to have a great production team who are committed to making films of the highest quality and finding ways of making our brand even stronger.
“We are looking ahead with confidence to a new chapter for Midsomer Murders while enjoying John Nettles’ contribution as Det Chief Insp Barnaby for a long time to come.”
