Last on MOTD: A clear leader emerges

25th August, 2007

I KNEW it! I knew it would happen!
Sooner or later, a team was bound to be last on Match of the Day twice. It has only taken four shows (MOTD2 doesn’t count) for a clear leader to emerge on the Gubbometer.
And that clear leader, you may not be surprised to learn, is Wigan Athletic. Last Saturday they were top of the Premier League, now they’re top of the rather less prestigious Last On MOTD League.
Tonight’s final match: West Ham 1 Wigan 1. Commentator: John Roder
There was a little bit of deja vu about this game, as Wigan boss Chris Hutchings once again managed to brighten up proceedings with a pink shirt and tie combination, as he did at Everton on the opening day. When did the Latics become this flamboyant? It never happened in Paul Jewell’s day.
Such flamboyance has clearly spread to the team, judging by Paul Scharner’s spectacular overhead kick to give Wigan the lead. I’d say it was just like watching Brazil… if Brazil still attempted to play entertaining football.
West Ham boss Alan Curbishley used the phrase “two points dropped”. Hutchings could have confessed to the Brinks Mat robbery for all I know; I didn’t take in a single word of his post-match interview, as I was too busy staring at his shirt. How many more pink shirts do you have in your wardrobe, Chris?
