Last on MOTD: Guess who?

16th September, 2007

POOR Emile Heskey. No sooner does he win back his international place after a three-year wait, he suffers a suspected broken metatarsal, seemingly the only injury any England player is allowed to pick up these days. And he’s back to being last on Match Of The Day again as well.
If x-rays confirm a break, then the Wigan striker will probably miss England’s Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia next month. A big blow for his country, given how well he combined with Michael Owen against Israel and Russia at Wembley.
But the news wasn’t quite big enough to get Wigan’s game promoted above Birmingham v Bolton in the MOTD running order. They’ll be choking on their Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls in Wigan this weekend.
Last night’s final match: Wigan 1 Fulham 1. Commentator: Paul Mitchell
As if Heskey’s injury wasn’t news enough, the match at the JJB Stadium also saw Rob Styles give a penalty. But for all you Liverpool fans still seething about the decidedly dodgy spot-kick he gave Chelsea at Anfield four weeks ago, this one was justified. Hamer Bouazza clearly clipped Mario Melchiot’s heel, and Jason Koumas scored to give the Latics a point.
For all this, Wigan were still on last. In six regular MOTD shows this season, they have been on last in three and on second last in another two. It’s manager Chris Hutchings I feel sorry for. Yet again, he made a real effort with his outfit, wearing a spectacular lime green tie this week… and still it’s not enough. What does he have to do to get his team on MOTD earlier?
It may get worse before it gets better, too. Next Saturday, Wigan are at Reading. At this rate, they could have the Gubbometer won by Christmas.
Gubbometer
1. Wigan – 3
2. Fulham – 2
3. Gubba – 1
4. Bolton – 1
5. Everton – 1
5. Newcastle – 1
5. Aston Villa – 1
5. West Ham – 1
5. Middlesbrough – 1
5. Birmingham – 1

One Response to “Last on MOTD: Guess who?”

  1. Yeah, but couldn’t being on last mean that Wigan are in fact the most popular team, because it will make the fans stay on JUST TO SEE WIGAN games?
I can just imagine in living rooms all round, ” Hooray! We’ve finally gotten past all those boring United, Arsenal, Chav$ki & Liverpool matches now let’s all settle down in our comfy arm-chairs with our “Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls”(?) and watch the team we’ve all been waiting for, THE LATICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then again, maybe it has something to do with the fact that they are a rugby club who only made it to the actual Football League in ‘78, and the much overlooked fact of that is that they only got in in the first place because of F.A. rubbish about the actual Northern Premier League champions of the time, Boston United, being deemed to have “inadequate facilities” for the Football League.
Yeah, maybe, that has something to do with it.
